Back Bay Act is approved by voters.
April 25, 1859
In a special referendum, voters approve annexation of the Back Bay lands by the city, filling the mudflats and building sewer lines across the area, and designating part of the land for creation of a public garden. Three days earlier, the Boston Saturday Evening Gazette had published an article supporting the ballot question and calling the Back Bay “[An] unmitigated nuisance and source of disease.”
